  1. This application allows you to make some adjustments to the
  2. way the Finder displays the desktop.  The font and size of the
  3. text drawn on the desktop can be changed, as can the icon
  4. spacing and many other parameters.

  6. Your custom display specifications are saved within the Finder
  7. itself and from then on they will be used whenever that Finder
  8. is in control.

  14. Open
  15.  
  16. Allows you to select the Finder file you wish to modify.
  17.  
  18. When the application starts up, it automatically opens the Finder
  19. in the current System Folder.  If it can't find a Finder, it prompts
  20. you to use the Open command to select a Finder.
  21.  
  22. If you have made changes to a previously opened Finder, you
  23. are first asked if you want to save those changes.
  24.  
  25. Old Finders do not have the ability to be customized.  If you
  26. try to open an old Finder you will get a message to this effect.

  29. Save
  30.  
  31. Writes out any changes you made to the Finder so they are
  32. permanently saved.

  35. Revert…
  36.  
  37. This command forgets any changes you have made, and restores
  38. the settings which were last saved in this Finder.  It is useful
  39. when you want to undo all changes since the last Save or since
  40. the application was started if you haven't done a Save yet.

  43. Defaults…
  44.  
  45. This command forgets any changes you have made, and
  46. restores the standard default settings of a "normal" Finder,
  47. which may or may not be different from the settings last saved
  48. in the currently open Finder.  The command is useful if you want
  49. to undo all the changes you ever made to this Finder and return
  50. it to normal.

  52. This command changes all the settings.  Many settings can be
  53. changed to the standard defaults individually.  For example,
  54. you can restore the standard Small Icon spacing by double-
  55. clicking on the grey icon in the Small Icon View window.

  58. Get FromΓǪ
  59.  
  60. This command lets you copy the layout from one Finder into
  61. another one.  It presents a file selection box where you can open
  62. a Finder other than the one you are working on.  The settings for
  63. the Finder you are working on will be changed to duplicate the
  64. settings for the Finder you select. 
  65.  
  66. The command is useful when you have updated to a new version
  67. of the system but want to keep your customized layout settings.
  68. First save a copy of your old customized Finder on a diskette.
  69. Then update to the new system.  To get the layout from the old
  70. Finder into the new one: Start Layout, which will show the
  71. settings from the new system's Finder.  Next use the "Get
  72. FromΓǪ" command and select the copy of the old Finder which
  73. you saved previously. The settings will change to your custom
  74. ones.  Then quit Layout, saving the changes when asked.  Now
  75. your new system should have your custom layout!

  80. This command exits the program.  If you made any changes, it
  81. gives you a chance to save them first.

  87. Small Icon View
  88.  
  89. Selecting this command displays a grid of icons in the "by Small
  90. Icon" format.  By dragging the gray icon, you can set the hori-
  91. zontal and vertical spacing of the grid.  This spacing will be used
  92. by the Finder whenever you issue a "Clean Up" command, when
  93. a new icon is created, and when a "gridded drag" takes place in
  94. a "by Small Icon" format window (see the "Always Grid Drags"
  95. command below).

  98. Icon View
  99.  
  100. This command is automatically in effect when the application
  101. starts up.  It displays a grid of icons in the usual "by Icon"
  102. format.  You can adjust the grid spacing by dragging the light
  103. gray icon, and the grid offset by dragging the dark gray icon.
  104. The grid offset vertically staggers the icons, allowing you to
  105. space the icons a bit closer together and still read the document
  106. titles.  The grid you specify will be used when you do a "Clean
  107. Up", gridded drag, or when a new icon is created in a "by Icon"
  108. format window.

  111. Text Views
  112.  
  113. This command allows you to adjust parameters that control
  114. the windows displayed in the "by Name", "by Size", "by Date"
  115. and "by Kind" formats, as well as the printed output generated
  116. by the "Print Catalog" command in the Finder.

  118. When you adjust the column spacing by dragging a dotted line,
  119. that line and those to its right are shifted over.  The Finder
  120. truncates any text which is too wide for the column (an effect
  121. which is not simulated here), so make sure the Size, Date, Time
  122. and other columns are wide enough.  You cannot change the
  123. ordering of the columns or eliminate any of them.

  125. Each column can be left or right justified, and the format of the
  126. date can be set to short (12/25/87), medium (Thu Dec 25, 1987)
  127. or long (Thursday, December 25, 1987).  The date cycles through
  128. the three formats when you double-click in the date column.

  130. The column by which entries in the text view are sorted ("Name
  131. in View by name, "Kind" in view by kind, etc.) is displayed
  132. according to the settings checked in the Style menu. Some early
  133. versions of the Finder don't have this option and in those cases
  134. the menu will remain disabled.

  137. Default Window
  138.  
  139. This command displays a window which controls the position
  140. and size of new windows created by the Finder.  The radio
  141. buttons in the window let you specify the kind of view given
  142. to windows of newly initialized disks (windows of new folders
  143. are given the same view that the "parent" window has regard-
  144. less of the setting of the radio buttons).

  147. Grid
  148.  
  149. When this menu item is checked, the adjustments you make to
  150. the icon spacing in the "Small Icon View" and "Icon View" are
  151. snapped to an invisible grid.  To make fine adjustments to the
  152. spacing, remove the checkmark.  This command is not related
  153. to the "Always Grid Drags" command described below.

  156. Use Zoom Rects
  157.  
  158. This menu item is normally checked, which means that the
  159. usual zooming effect will take place when the Finder opens
  160. a window or an application.  If you remove the checkmark,
  161. the Finder will not use the zooming effect.

  164. Always Grid Drags
  165.  
  166. This item is normally not checked, which means you can position
  167. icons freely on the desktop.  If you check this item, whenever
  168. you drag an icon, it will snap into position on the grid
  169. automatically without having to do a "Clean Up".

  172. Skip Trash Warnings
  173.  
  174. THIS COMMAND IS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS.  If you set a
  175. checkmark on this item, the Finder will skip the usual warning
  176. that is given whenever you throw an application or System file
  177. into the trash.

  180. Title Bar Click
  181.  
  182. This item is normally not checked.  If it is checked, a feature
  183. in the Finder is enabled:  Double-clicking on the title bar of a
  184. window will cause that window's "parent window" to be opened
  185. (or come to the front if already open).  The "parent window" is
  186. the one that contains the folder the original window represents.

  189. Watch ThresholdΓǪ
  190.  
  191. This allows you to adjust how long to wait before the Finder
  192. will display a wristwatch cursor with animated hands during
  193. such lengthy operations as file copying. Older Finders don't use
  194. this option and in those cases it is disabled and can not be
  195. selected.  The time is expressed in 60ths of a second. If you
  196. make it too short, the cursor will jitter and change shape too
  197. often.

  200. Max WindowsΓǪ
  201.  
  202. This allows you to set the maximum number of windows the
  203. Finder can open at one time.  Increasing the number of windows
  204. causes the Finder to need more memory.  Under MultiFinder, you
  205. may have to increase the memory allocation for the Finder.

  208. Color StyleΓǪ
  209.  
  210. This option is dimmed unless you are using a Macintosh which
  211. has Color QuickDraw.  It allows you to change the style used to
  212. color the desktop icons. You can also adjust the colors which
  213. appear in the Finder Color menu, so you can make the desktop
  214. icons appear in any color you like.

  217. The Font Menu
  218.  
  219. By selecting a font name from this menu, you will change the
  220. font of most text displayed by the Finder.  This includes the
  221. icon titles, the window top margin text, all the text in the
  222. Text Views, and the printed text generated by "Print Catalog".
  223. A check is placed next to the font the Finder will use, unless
  224. that font is not in the current System file.

  226. The font names displayed are those which are installed in the
  227. current System.  If you later change the System fonts or use
  228. the Finder with a different System file, the font you specified
  229. may be missing. In that case the default font will be used.

  232. The Size Menu
  233.  
  234. This menu displays the various sizes you can set the text to.
  235. Font sizes which are installed in the current System file for
  236. the checked name in the Font menu are hilighted.  If you later
  237. use the Finder with a different or modified System, the size
  238. may not be available and a scaled font will be used.

  241. The Style Menu
  242.  
  243. This menu is active when the Text View is being displayed,
  244. except when using an older Finder. It adjusts the style of the
  245. heading of the column by which the view is sorted. See the
  246. section on "Text Views" above for more information.
